Do you know your standfirst from your pull quote? Can you pitch a newsy hook?

If not, this magazinecraft workshop is for you.

There were around 3,000 UK magazines listed by the Magnetic Media market overview in 2016. Print magazines reached 29m adults every month.

That’s a lot of potential work for freelance writers.

Building on ideas from my previous workshops, I will share my insider tips on how to understand magazines, pitch your story ideas — and get paid.

This three-hour, practical session will feature a mix of discussion, hands-on exercises and learning points.

By the end of the workshop you will be able to:

  • Understand how magazines work
  • Generate the kind of ideas editors want
  • Approach commissioning editors with your stories
  • Build a community of editors and start earning money

The morning comprises three hours of personal tuition and exercises. You then have the option to pick my brains informally over lunch afterwards (lunch not included in the cost).

I’m a freelance writer and independent media tutor with 20 years experience of making a living from selling words.

My writing portfolio includes travel journalism for the Daily Telegraph, online content for tourism companies like Visit Wales and copywriting for various clients and agencies.

Please message me with any questions.
