Video of the day: Vilnius video blog

SANYO DIGITAL CAMERA

Something different this week.

A few years, when media soothsayers were predicting video was the new copy and commissioning editors started incorporating video content int commissions, I played around with the idea of a video blog.

I even got round recording a few of them, using existing commissions to do some ad-hoc video work in situ.

I quite enjoyed it but never took it much further.

Nevertheless, I’ve got the same video camera today and still can turn my hand to a simple bit of video content to upload my channel on YouTube.

Here’s an early example of the video blogs, a piece taken from a research trip to Vilnius (pictured above) for the start of the European Capital of Culture in 2009.

Watch the Vilnius video blog.

I’d love to hear your comments, tips, advice. They may come in handy one day if – or is that, when – print journalism is finally laid to rest.

Story of the day: Kinderhotel in Austria

An old story to end the week – the first ever family travel piece when Maya (pictured above, aged six months) was just a baby.

Here’s an extract:

Little Maya was strapped to a giant runbber ring as I struggled to follow the singalong in German, while a large Austrian woman poured water over our heads from a plastic watering can.

Maya loved it and went off to the creche afterwards.

I took a Nordic walking class with Arnold. A strapping man with, sadly, a major sense of humour bypass, he clearly regarded walking as far more than just moving your feet in a vaguely co-ordinated way.

An hour later and we had established that while Austria’s scenery is superb, my talent for Nordic walking was limited.

‘Your problem is that your arms are just too short,’ said Arnold.

Story of the day: public art in Wales

Going local. It’s one of the big discoveries for me as a freelance writer in recent years.

With two small kids, I’m in no position to jet off for two weeks on a long-haul assignment.

And, besides, there is a wealth of good material right on my doorstep in North Wales as this recent example  – a pre-emptive strike on a Valentine’s motif – goes to prove.

This story, taken from the Independent, is another such example from a few years back.

It’s a place I hadn’t been to since childhood but was happy to re-discover in a new context.

Here’ s an extract:

As we cross a plateau, overlooking the Vale of Clwyd, the tower looms, weather-beaten but still imbuing a stoic sense of pride.

A stone-pitched slate path marks the final, steep ascent to the foot of the tower where we sit, munching biscuits and sharing a flask of milky coffee.

From the battlements the full widescreen view opens out: west to Snowdon and Cader Idris, east to Liverpool, and north-west to Llandudno’s Little Orme.

“I find being here quite uplifting,” says Chris. “It inspires a sense of freedom embedded in me on walks to the tower with my dad during my childhood.”
